In the DP165 flashback, we saw that Flint was 20 when he left Sunyshore to become an Elite Four. When he left, he still had a Chimchar, which evolved as he trained.

Now, DP180 shows that Flint was the same age as Ash Ketchum when he defeated the League for the first time, and that his Chimchar had already evolved into a Monferno by then! More like, Monfer-no. GOOD MORNING, WRITERS.
